Being born in Albuquerque, New Mexico wasn’t so bad for Ethan – especially since he was only there for a minimal amount of time. When he was three, his family began the first move that would predate the multiple uprooting they’d eventually become accustom to. Every few years, the Simms family found themselves being relocated as a result of Ethan’s father’s job. Being in the Air Force, his dad was constantly being changed around in order to help get several bases back on the track they were intended to be on. Whether Ethan liked it or not, he was considered an army brat. He never stayed in one place for too long, and eventually he got used to having to make new friends wherever his family landed next.
Life at home, wherever it was that month, was spent studying diligently and pretending to be active in the societies that Ethan’s mother wanted him to. Truth be told, he never partook in any of the chosen events or groups he was directed to; instead, the Simms boy took to underground events that showed what the new society was really like. Some cities were big on late night street racing, while others focused on underground fighting rings where people fought in to make a name for themselves. Whatever the flavor of the city, Ethan sat back and enjoyed the ride. The activities didn’t hinder him if he wasn’t interested; instead of letting everyone else have all the fun, he joined in whatever he was allowed. Nothing seemed to last that long anyway.
At the age of 17, Ethan was brought back to the States for the first time in years. With his father close to retirement, the Simms family would be finishing up the remainder of his duty back in the place they originally called home. Not wanting to give up the expanded lifestyles he learned from other lands, he took up hiking as a pastime. With mountains just beyond his fingertips, he’d take to climbing and traveling them all within his free moments; he was never one for boredom or trivial things such as high school sports. In his eyes, life wasn’t meant to be wasted with just learning and normal teenage boozing parties – he wanted to spend his time pursuing the things that really mattered to him.
As the years grew on, Ethan found himself growing tired of the boredom his life had become without the constant migration of his family. Deciding to go out on a hike that many would deem stupid – his parents including – he left without much more than a goodbye and a promise to be back later. During the summer break between college semesters, he set out on a journey by himself; the most dangerous thing he could have done. High atop the Appalachian Mountains, Ethan was greeted by a flurry of challenges: snow, cold nights, animal crossings, and the threat on his life. One night while taking refuge in a cave, Ethan was pulled from his slumber and set up for disaster. Ethan found himself face-to-face with a stone-faced, solemn creature whose very eyes pulled him from the sanity he had known for years.
The Maedar that trapped Ethan held him hostage for two weeks, playing with the mind of the human and causing him to lose his grapple on sanity. The poison that infected the boy’s mind had him weak and paralyzed; he was close to being ripe enough for the male Gorgon to eat. The surge of power that entered Ethan’s blood one day while the Maedar had left went largely unnoticed by the man; he was too weak to feel the transformation. The Ancients’ chose him to carry on a lineage of Evocation, though their choice seemed to have come a bit too late. Once the Shadowkind creature had returned to his cave, he began to prepare for his finally ripe meal. Ethan barely took notice of the creature’s astonishment when he was ripped apart by pure energy thanks to a mysterious stranger who rescued the new Arcanist.
Healed completely after his rescue, Ethan was taken into training by his very savior: Xakiel the Essentian. The first of his chosen students, Ethan was taught how to wield the mana now swimming through his veins. The war he had been thrust into was waging on rapidly, and his part was to help save mankind. Not needing much convincing, Ethan looked at his new chance at life as a new, exciting way to live. Instead of the boring lifestyle he had known since being back in the States, he was being offered a chance to live in excitement once again. Embracing his Evocation gifts, he set out to be the best pupil he could.
