Gideon Shaw is a New York raised doctor who currently presides in Los Angeles as a resident physician at ULCA Medical Center. For the most part those who know him only know him as a colleague or work buddy, no one really seems to know much about his friends or if he has any, but all they know is that Gideon pulls the most overtime hours in the hospital nearly every month. Its not that he's a loner, but rather his life has steered him into a position where its best not to depend on others too much and where he loves his job and does his best for his patients, which typically comes at the expense of his own personal life.
Gideon was raised in NYC by his mother Pia Shaw. His father had disappeared and was found dead shortly before his birth leaving his family a small fortune to offset the lack of steady income, and depriving his son of a real father figure. But the family recovered and Gideon served as the emotional anchor his mother needed during her time of mourning. She managed to instill the drive for education and perseverance that would become engraved in Gideon's mind for his entire life. Gideon's drive would lead him to excel in school all the way up through undergrad and medical school in California where he decided to reside for his internship and Residency program despite being separated from his mother.
Due to the cut throat nature of his medical school, Gideon never learned to trust many people his own age going through the same trials as him, he only learned how to keep people at manageable distances that didn't interfere with his own goals, a concept he seemed to adopt for his work in the hospital much to the chagrin of his attendings. While he has calmed down a fair bit, Gideon has dedicated more time to the hospital than most of his peers and has yet to learn the importance of taking care of one's needs before those of others.
