Pre-Alchemy[]

Growing up in a white-collar neighborhood, life on his lane was full of deceitful smiles and hushed secrets. With his family being a well-known influence on his suburban town, not many dared to speak about the rumors that stemmed from the nighttime arguments that sometimes drifted from an open window from their home. Kiefer had one goal throughout his childhood: grow up and get the hell out of dodge. He dreamed of escaping the monstrosities that took place when the front door was shut; he watched his mom stay in a loveless marriage, scared for her and her children’s lives if she dared to leave. He watched her mind slowly wither away with each abusive blow—and when her time was up, his was next in line. He fought back, but more often than not his advances were not up to par.

On his eighteenth birthday, he took off. The only person that had kept him there for so long moved off for college, and he had every intention of following her. That wasn’t hers – selfishly, she pushed him away and moved on with her life, leaving him to deal with himself alone. He made his way to West Virginia, enrolling himself in college courses and focusing on social work. He wanted to help those who couldn’t help themselves, and it didn’t matter how hard he had to work; he had decided he was going to give them a voice. Juggling school and a job was difficult, but he managed without complaints; the auto-shop he took refuge in gave him a refuge, and the friends there served as the support he needed but never had.

At 27, one night didn’t want to go his way. With the auto-shop only being a few blocks down from the social services office he had been working at, he usually walked the way, not minding the moonlit journey. What usually was a quick, uninterrupted trip was unexpectedly twisted into an attack – with Kiefer at the receiving end. A woman of inexplicable beauty called out to him, diverting him from his path and leading him to a remote forested area. The only thing he remembers from that night was the way a beautiful face blurred into a monstrous mug. The excruciating pain that ripped into his body still washes over his skin as a fading reminder every now and then.

Ever since the experience, he’s found himself forgetting bits and pieces of his days. He can’t recall parts of his childhood; the thoughts of his family’s abuse have been repressed from his mind. His psychiatrist claims he is repressing his traumatic experiences so that he doesn’t have to deal with or relive them. Some days he wakes up and can’t recall what he’s done in the past few days; and some days, in cases where he gets extremely angry, he finds crackling black energy leaping from his fingertips. He doesn’t know how he gained these abilities, but he believes that it has to do with that fateful encounter. Little does he know, the pain that he went through – the Ancients placing power into him – saved his life that night.
